Hi, thank you for your interest in flying at Marymoor Park’s RC field. This page will provide information to help you get started. We find that most of the folks who contact us usually fall into a few categories:
1) Youth: If you are under 18 years of age and have an interest in what we do, the club has a large youth group that usually meets at the field on Sunday’s around 10am. We encourage potential members and their parent/guardian to visit the field at this time to check out ‘the vibe’ and see if it is a good fit. We usually find that the age of 11 or 12 is a good age to start this hobby. Flight training is available on Tuesday nights.
2) Adults wanting to get into the hobby and have never flown: Feel free to stop by the field to talk to any of the members that are flying and ask questions. We offer flight training on Tuesday nights from 5-8pm.
3) Adults wanting to get back into the hobby: Welcome back, we’ve missed you! Check out how you can sign up for a proficiency test. Need a few lessons with an instructor to get your fingers working properly? visit the flight training page to arrange 1:1 training.
Training
Our club offers a training program that is held on Tuesday nights (weather permitting) from 5-8pm May-August. The club provides the equipment (radio, plane, batteries, etc) until you solo. You don’t need to be a member of the AMA or the club for your first training session (we want to you to check it out and see if it is something you want to pursue). However, if you decide to pursue more lessons, we then require you to join these organizations.
Please note that this is a very popular program and we have a limited number of instructors, so please read the training page carefully. There is an option to sign up for training at other times of the week that fit your schedule, but we encourage training on Tuesday nights for the following reasons; 1) the field is closed to all flying except training flights and 2) there is a synergy of having a bunch of students, instructors and support staff onsite at the same time.
Note to parents of students: we require a parent or guardian to be onsite during training. Bring some food, water and sunscreen and make it a picnic as your child learns how to fly (or, sign up for lessons yourself).
Questions and Answers
Do I have to join the club to fly at the field?
Yes, you do. The exception is if you are doing your first training sessions with an instructor or you are an invited guest of a club member. The club dues are $60 a year and is a very good deal considering the facility we have and the close proximity to the metropolitan area. Few RC clubs are this affordable.
Do I need to join AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics)
The Marymoor RC club is an AMA charted club, and as such, you need to join the AMA after your first lesson. The fee for this is $75 per adult and $15 for youth members (annual). This gets you a great magazine and (most important) insurance for participating in this hobby.
Can I fly my drone at Marymoor?
Yes, you can. Please check out this page
I have more questions, how do I get them answered?
The best option is to come to the field and talk to some of our members. You can also email the club.
