March Club Meeting and Upcoming Events

Do you have skills you can pass on to others?

The crummy season has set in and we’re hunting for the odd day we can get down to the field to fly between the raindrops. It’s a reminder of how much the hobby means to us, and how important it is for us to help new fliers get to the stage where they, too, will develop a healthy distrust of the accuracy of the forecast and risk a trip to Marymoor ‘just in case’ there’s a dry window for a couple of flights.

With that in mind please start to think about whether you might be able to take the opportunity to help those new fliers and join the club training effort. We have planned a few changes this year to our May-August program, adding flexibility to accommodate student and instructor commitments outside of flying. We have three goals in mind: enable more skilled club members to join in as instructors, work with those busy schedules of everyone involved, and – perhaps most important – graduate more proficient fliers to join the club so they too can enjoy all we have to offer.

E-mail training@mar-c.org with your details if you think you can help in any capacity, or if you’d just like more info. We need flight instructors of course but also general helpers to charge batteries, help with quick mechanical and technical fixes, manage ad-hoc enquiries at the field, and so on.

It really is a lot of fun spending some time building students’ skills while enjoying the field on those glorious PNW summer evenings!

Spring Swap Meet and Fun Fly

Please do not park or drive on the grass

Hello All,

The days are starting to get longer, and we’ve had some great weather recently.  We hope to see you at the field soon getting those fingers and thumbs working again.

Park employees have observed some of our club members driving or parking on the grass between the fence and parking lot.  Park management has told us that multiple King County codes prohibit parking or driving on the grass.  We’ve also learned that when some of us do, it upsets the employees whose job is to protect the beauty of the park.

So, from now on we must not park on the grass or even drive on it to unload planes before parking in the lot.  I recognize this is inconvenient for some of you, but please recognize that Marymoor Park is our host.  While we have a multi-year agreement with them, we can’t take the arrangement for granted.

The best approach to keeping our jewel of an RC field has always been to preserve excellent relations with park management and employees that take care of the park.  We work with them regularly on many issues such as assuring safety of other park patrons, economical payment agreements, mowing the outfield so we can more easily find our planes, and most recently substantial funding and support for our construction project.

For all that, the least we can do is help them keep the grass healthy by not driving on it.  The only exceptions are the few park employees that must drive on the grass to do their jobs, such as collecting our garbage.

Thanks for your attention.  Let’s all remain friends with Marymoor Park.

February Club Meeting  - Wednesday the 21st 7-9 pm

We have an exciting club meeting coming up this month! Chris H. and Guillaume S. will be doing a presentation on Soldering. No matter what type of aircraft you fly, at some point you will find the need to solder a battery connector or two.

In this presentation, Guillaume and Chris will be going over soldering equipment recommendations and tools to make the job easier. There will also be a live demonstration on soldering techniques. This will be one meeting you won't want to miss!
Don't forget to enter the Raffle. The prize this month will be a brand new soldering iron!

Location: Lake Washington School District office - 16250 NE 74th St, Redmond, WA 98052

Do we Need Your Pledge ??

(1/19/2024) 50 of you generously pledged to donate to the construction project about a year and a half ago!  A lot has changed since.  Here are our thoughts.

Our team gathered quotes from contractors over the last 6 months, and carefully refined our understanding of the true costs.  In 2022 the plan was to pay for the project with club funds and pledges.  In 2023 we applied for, and were awarded a Community Project Grant (CPG) through King County Parks.  That was a huge help, but then costs soared.  Finally, the project was saved by our amazing King County Park partners, who found other ways to pay for excavation, electrical work, and the ADA path.

It is very close.  AT THIS TIME we don’t believe we need the pledges to complete the project.   As long as we don't have any surprises, our bank balance at completion will be somewhat below levels that we used to be comfortable with.  It will take a year or two to recover so that we have more than a year’s worth of expenses in the bank.

We WILL ask for your pledge or some percentage of it if unforeseen costs occur.  Everyone is familiar with construction costing more than the original bids due to unforeseen issues.  We have a 10% buffer in our budget to mitigate that risk, and we will monitor expenses carefully during construction.

There will be opportunities to VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME to make our new buildings useful and beautiful.  Our budget covers materials for things like moving topsoil and re-seeding disturbed areas, painting the exterior, and building work benches and pegboards in the shed for storing and repairing our squadron of training planes.  Battery charging shelves will be built under the charging shelter close to the power outlets, and our work benches will move from the old shelter to the new one.

By the way, if you haven’t done so already, please renew your membership!  Youth members need to log in and do the annual “check in” process.

Breaking Ground Jan. 22 !!

Happy New Year!

It’s going to be a significant year for the club.  We will break ground on the Field Improvement Project on or near January 22!

We launched the project in the spring of 2022.  It consists of a permanent 20’x20’ storage shed and 42’x12’ charging pavilion at the east end of the pit area.   We need to communicate several things:

  1. There could be a few brief field closures during the construction.  We will get information out to the whole membership by email as promptly as possible when we see this might happen.  The closures would be during the work week, so weekend flying would probably not be affected.

  2. There should only be a brief interruption to electrical power when the power is finally moved from the current outlets to the new locations.  Our current charging shelter might be fenced off briefly during some parts of the construction when trenches might be open for electrical conduit to the new location.

  3. Obviously, we should keep out of fenced construction areas.

  4. During construction, do not park in the eastern part of the parking lot near the Porta-potties so that construction trucks and trailers can back into the site.  Please, NO parking outside the parking lot

  5. There will be opportunities to VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME to make our new buildings useful.  We’ll move some topsoil and re-seed some areas.  We’ll paint the exterior and build work benches and pegboards in the storage shed.   Battery charging shelves will be built under the charging shelter close to the power outlets, and our work benches will move from the old shelter to the new one.

This months Club Meeting will be changing to our old location at the Lake Washington School District Offices. Going forward, the meetings will be held here on Wednesday evenings from 7-9pm. The location for the LWSD offices are 16250 NE 74th St, Redmond, WA 98052 The club will be utilizing the board room which has a lot more space to hold our meetings.

Guillaume, our new Safety Officer, will be doing a presentation on Club Safety as it relates to our hobby. There have been several changes in the last few years with FAA rules as it pertains to Model Aircraft. His discussion will go over AMA guidelines, Setting up Failsafe, Range check and much more. We encourage pilots to bring their radios and follow along with setting up Failsafe, flight modes and performing range checks. Several people with first hand knowledge will be there to help with any radio programming.

In addition to our Safety presentation, the club will be having a swap meet, show and tell, and a raffle. This months prize will be a 32inch foam Fok.D VII park flyer biplane and a Stanley Storage bin. For the Swap meet, feel free to bring anything your interested in selling. If you have larger airplanes your interested in selling, you may want to wait till March for our Spring Swap meet on Saturday, March 16th.
